Nigeria can’t meet Jan 2015 deadline

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) feels that the need to carry along about 80% of Nigerians who use free-to-air television platforms can pose as a major deterrent for Nigeria to meet the January 2015 deadline it set for the digital switch-over.

“It is a major challenge because we are going into an election year; election is about 60 days away. The NBC could not risk switching over without adequately catering for about 80% of FTA television viewers,” said Emeka Mba, DIRECTOR General of the NBC.

“Therefore, we need to have strong free-to-air channel and that is what NBC is working towards and we are doing this in concert with Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (NBC), to make sure we can aggregate existing and new channels that will be available for Nigerians to enjoy on a free to air basis,” he added.
