Government tightens rules on social media in Lesotho

Lesotho’s government announced new laws and rules to regulate social media behaviours. Under the proposed bill, anyone who posts a text, image, video that is accessible to at least 100 users or who has more than 100 followers have to be registered, as ‘internet broadcasters’ with the Lesotho Communications Authority. This will allow regulators to investigate social media users posts.

Other nations like Tanzania which recently passed these new regulations seek to punish social media users who abuse or harm the reputation and status of the country. To note, Kenya introduced similar law next year.
