The news has been revealed by the department of communications in parliament last week. Around 650000 set-top boxes, that have been locally made, have been delivered in South Africa’s Post Office, in connection to the digital migration project.
Three local manufacturers; CZ Electronics, Leratadima and BUA Africa, were asked to produce 1.5 M STBs or 500000 each. 174993 and 23300 boxes have been delivered by Leratadima and BUA Africa respectively. Terrestrial antennas and satellite dishes’ delivery have also started. The industries involved are QEC, Temic Manufacturing and Ellies Industries.
QEC has delivered 126536 antennas, Temic on the other hand has produced 65575 antennas and 201620 satellite dishes have been delivered by Elllies. 5.2 million STBs are expected by the department of communications to be delivered to qualifying households.
It is to be noted that roll-out in the Free State will kick off this year and the rest of the country will keep up if sufficient funding is provided.
