Viettel, the Vietnamese telecom group, has unveiled its interest in the Ethiopian telecom market. This follows from the forthcoming opening of the capital of the incumbent operator Ethio Telecom to foreign investors, announced by the government on June 5th. The telecom company will consider all the options proposed by the Ethiopian government if they are consistent with its investment strategy.
Ethiopia, in Africa, is one of the few telecom markets that have remained in the hands of the state. As a result, competition has not changed. Although new technologies are already present, the lack of a diversity of offers and prices still represents a significant obstacle to a full telecom experience of consumers.
The collaboration between the Ethiopian government and the large telecom group that will eventually be chosen – MTN and Vodacom are also interested – will however have an impact on the level of people’s access to services and their quality. Viettel, which boasts extensive experience in network deployment and telecom service provision, believes it could contribute to the development of the Ethiopian telecom market, which has nearly 68 million subscribers for a population of 107 million.
