Turner Broadcasting-owned children’s pay TV channel Cartoon Network has launched an initiative to create an animated comedy for its viewers in Africa.
Turner Broadcasting continues their journey with the African animation industry with the launch of Cartoon Network’s Creative Lab initiative. The winners of Creative Lab and the continental winners of Annecy – MIFA Pitches Animation du Monde will be announced at DISCOMICS Joburg.
“We have worked hard and had great opportunities to build long-lasting relationships with numerous influential networks, studios and animation associations in Africa, and we are fascinated by how the African filmmaking community brings creatives together from all over the continent,” said Ariane Suveg, head of programming and acquisition, Turner Kids Africa.
Interested participants must be 18 and above to qualify. Entries should be of the comedy genre and should be submitted as a one-minute or three-minute video. Submissions will end on August 31.
Ten projects will be shortlisted in September, and the finalists will get the opportunity to pitch their work to Cartoon Network.
The finalists will have their work produced as a pilot with Cartoon Network Africa, with the show airing on the channel in 2019.
Suveg concluded, “We are honoured to be supporting local African animation talent through the Cartoon Network Africa Creative Lab. We look forward to seeing the entries and hope to see the winners flourish in their careers as content creators, following in the footsteps of some of Cartoon Network’s greatest talents.”
