StarTimes reintroduces local channels in Kenya

Chinese pay-TV provider, StarTimes Media, has re-introduced major local channels, KTN, NTV and Citizen TV, on its digital television platform in Kenya following Supreme Court’s ruling on September 29.

NTV, Citizen and KTN had challenged Communications Commission of Kenya (CAK) over the award of digital migration contract to StarTimes. The Supreme Court had blocked Kenyan pay-TV providers- Signet, StarTimes, Pan Africa Network Group (PANG) and MultiChoice’s GOtv, from broadcasting free-to-air content from Royal Media Services, Nation Media Group and the Standard Group without their consent until an appeal was heard.

However, in September, the Supreme Court directed the CAK to reopen licensing of digital signal distribution for 90 days and asked CAK and the three local broadcasters to agree on a new timeline on the migration from analogue to digital television broadcast.
