The Chinese Pay TV firm, StarTimes intends to roll out free digital TV project to rural regions of Africa in a Corporate Social Responsibility move. Japheth Akhulia, StarTimes Media Kenya Director of Brand Marketing and PR said that the project will see 10,000 African villages having access to free digital TV service.

The rollout comes after a successful pilot project where the StarTimes connected over 100 households in the southwestern Kajiado County. Akhulia said that many African countries embraced the digital migration and switched off analogue broadcasting. He however said households in the rural villages have not been able to afford the expensive equipment to watch digital terrestrial television.

The Chinese Pay TV firm noted that they are now an integral part of the African community. Akhulia added that they are currently lobbying with government officials across the continent to work out on the modalities to ensure the success of the project.  The broadcaster has gained significant market share in the competitive pay television landscape by offering quality content at affordable rates.
