In Ivory Coast, the Société des Grands Médias (SGM), a private company, will inaugurate the new channel, titled ‘Nouvelle Chaine Ivoirienne’ (NCI). Programs from the new generalist channel are expected to begin as soon as Ivorian digital terrestrial television is launched in 2018.
The promoters of NCI plan to offer a varied catalogue of programs and entertainment related to the Ivorian culture in addition to daily news bulletins. Content will address the whole Ivory Coast audience. According to SGM, most of the content of the NCI will be produced locally.
The creation of the NCI follows the call for tenders issued by the High Authority for Audio-visual Communication (HACA) following the recent liberalization in December 2016 of the audio-visual space in Ivory Coast. As a reminder, since 1960, Ivory Coast’s audio-visual space has been occupied solely by Radio and Television of Ivory Coast (RTI), national television that has never competed in Ivory Coast except with Television Ivory Coast (TCI), which briefly issued programmes during the post-election crisis of 2011.
