SABC announced it has secured rights to broadcast the National Basketball Association (NBA) Africa Game 2017 which will take place during the weekend at the TicketPro Dome in Johannesburg.
SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said, “The NBA Africa Game pits NBA players of African origin versus the NBA players from the rest of the world. Dirk Nowitzki from Dallas Mavericks; Kemba Walker from Charlotte Hornets; South African Thabo Sefolosha from Atlanta Hawks and Luol Deng from Los Angeles Lakers will serve as team captains for NBA Africa Game 2017.” He added, “The NBA Africa Game 2017 will be broadcast live on SABC 1 and on Radio 2000 this Saturday [August 5], from 5pm.”
Group executive of SABC Sport, Sully Motsweni, added that it was a significant achievement and said that SABC Sport has done good in the market after also acquiring the broadcast rights for the Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) earlier this year. “It is a proud milestone for SABC Sport to be able to bring to our audience this high-profile NBA Africa Game 2017, as we continue to align our brand with big global brands like the NBA,” she said.
Motsweni added “This has been a busy year for SABC Sport and we can safely say we have done good business in the market, after we acquired EFC at the beginning of the year and in the last two months we were able to close deals for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia and also the 2020 and 2014 Olympic Games.”
Deng, a two-time NBA All-Star and Team Africa captain at NBA Africa Game 2015, and Sefolosha an 11-year NBA veteran would captain Team Africa.Team World will be co-captained by Nowitzki, a 13-time NBA All-Star and 2011 NBA Champion, and Walker, a 2017 NBA All-Star.
