Iflix the Malaysian OTT platform has set his gaze toward the African continent for some time now. Today all the work paid off with the installation of a new headquarters in Cape Town South Africa.
Following this new position four new markets will join the already big customer base of the internet TV service, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. This new expansion follows the US$ 90 million fund raising backed by Liberty Global, Zain and a trust fund in Africa.
Iflix will offer Hollywood, Bollywood and Nollywood content to its customers as well as locally produced shows.
Mark Britt Co-founder and CEO of the company declared: “By 2020, Africa will have 720 million smartphone users. We aim to meet the entertainment needs of those growingly connected viewers.”
Even though internet penetration on the continent is low compared to other areas many OTT services have emerged like ShowMax for example which distributes mostly local content. But titans like Netflix and Amazon Prime are also on the breach.
Iflix since 2015 has a record of over five billion minutes of watched content as well as two digits’ growth.
