National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) of Nigeria has reportedly planned to back the on-going migration process from analogue to digital broadcasting through the sale of broadcasting spectrum bands.
The sale of all spectrum is likely to generate a revenue of NGN100 million and a portion of it would be utilised for digitalisation. NBC and a few other industry stake holders contemplate that this is an appropriate strategy to meet the deadline of transition by 2017 (deadline is agreed by West Africa regional bloc, ECOWAS).
“We are looking at a very creative of leveraging on our spectrum to pave way for digitisation, that is where we are, we have received approval for that and we are going to brief Mr. President very soon on the matter. But I think that is the only solution at hand now,” said Emeka Mba, Director General of NBC.
According to Yemisi Bamgbose, Chairman of Radio, Television and Theatre Arts Workers Union digitisation will be formidable if government does not fund the process.
