Nigeria requires NGN 60b for digital migration

The Nigerian government and other stakeholders require more than NGN 60 billion (USD 370 million) for the completion of the digital switch over, announced Emeka Mba, Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). The money will mainly be used for defraying the cost for manufacturing 40 million STBs.

Mba added that while digital free-to-air will remain a fundamental part of television broadcasting in the country, NBC soon plans to advertise its Expression of Interest (EoI) for the thematic free-to-air TV stations like sports, children, news and health television stations.

As of now, NBC has issued licences to 109 TV stations, 167 radio stations, 36 pay-TV and MMDS licences and 22 for campus radio, taking the total licenses issued so far to 334.
