MTN to officially introduce out-of-bundle data blocking in SA

In December 2017, MTN introduced an out-of-bundle (OOB) barring option, which enabled users to avoid out-of-bundle data usage.

This system offered users a simple means to block OOB usage by dialling *141*0# and selecting the appropriate option.

When choosing the option, users could select to turn the feature off and stop bill increase due to out-of-bundle spend.

Soon after this became accessible, however, MTN stepped back and said the feature was still a test programme and was not accessible to the general public.

“An error on the part of MTN has led to the incorrect impression that the company has launched an out-of-bundle barring service. This is currently not the case, MTN has not launched OOB barring functionality,” it said.

MTN executive for corporate affairs Jacqui O’Sullivan declared that MTN has still not rolled out its OOB barring option but added that it will do so at the end of February.

Jacqui O’Sullivan declared, “This option will be launched, in line with the requirements of the [ICASA] End User and Subscriber Service Charter Regulations, at the end of February. There is currently no OOB barring feature in place.”

She further said that MTN remains on track to cover all the requirements of the regulations at the end of February 2019.

To conclude, MTN has also applied several changes to its mobile network to comply with ICASA’s regulations. Mobile networks are requested to abide with the new regulations by 28 February 2019.
