MTN launched new OOB service in SA

MTN has recently launched a very simple way for its subscribers to block out-of-bundle (OOB) data usage, with its new “Out of Bundle Barring” service. Out-of-bundle Barring is available to users via USSD menu, by dialling *141*0#, and could be disable or enabled via this menu.

The service stated that it would prevent the unintended use of antenna time when a set of data is exhausted by terminating the data session. Out of Bundle Barring can be option 7,8 or 11 – depending on which package a subscriber in on.

MyBroadband tested the service and found that it worked on a prepaid 30-day data bundle, but did not work with a one-hour data bundle. MTN said it has been developing out-of-bundle data management features to deal with possible regulatory requirements laid out by ICASA.
MTN said the pilot projects related to the management of OOB data will continue and it will inform customers of any further developments. The price of out-of-bundle data has come under fire recently in South Africa, with users complaining about bill shock after using OOB data.

Out of Bundle Barring’s launch now means that Telkom and MTN customers can block OOB data usage by default on the networks.
