Hit Radio group in Morocco gets first audiovisual licenses

On July 26, the broadcasting group Hit Radio obtained two audiovisual licenses. The company publishing the eponymous radio will launch Télé Jeunesse and Télé Découverte in the coming days. The awarding of these licenses occurs 12 years after 2006 and the accreditation of Medi TV.

Whereas in 2002, Law 2-02-663 aimed to abolish the “State monopoly of broadcasting and television”, it was not until 2006 that the first steps towards Audiovisual landscape of the Cherifian kingdom.

It is, indeed, 4 years after the new law that Medi1 TV has obtained its operating license. Until 2010, the channel has broadcasted exclusively on satellite, before joining the analogue terrestrial network, after complaining to the regulator.

Since then, no private television channel has been accredited in Morocco. The main televisions dedicated to the kingdom, apart from those of the State, have acquired licenses abroad and are distributed on satellite.

With the upcoming launch of Hit Radio’s two television channels, private channel operators wishing to set up in the Moroccan market may have some hopes.
