Euronews has signed an agreement to launch a Pan-African news channel by mid-2015 with Télé Congo – the national television channel in the Republic of the Congo. Africanews will initially launch service in English and French, to be followed by other languages widely-spoken on the continent including Portuguese, Arabic, and Swahili.
“Our strategic and highly ambitious project will not be a mere African “window” made by Euronews, as most international news channels do, but rather a full-fledged Pan-African network, with editorial choices made by Africans for an African audience,” said Michael Peters, CEO of Euronews.
Africanews will have a team of 40 professional journalists and technicians based in Brazzaville, and will produce Pan-African news content for 24/7 TV broadcasts, live streaming on the internet, and live mobile applications. Non-linear formats will start right away with the www.africanews.com website and gradually move into specific mobile applications, following the latest trends in media consumption on the continent.
