Etisalat rolled out first commercial 5G network in the MENA region

UAE is the first country in which telecom company Etisalat has introduced its first commercial 5G wireless network and is by far the only operator to extend the 5G wireless network in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

5G networks are considered to be the essence of the next phase of industrial evolution, which will comprise of technologies like machine learning and internet of things (IoT) among others. The telecom operator stated that selected locations in the UAE will benefit from 5G fixed wireless services in September and these services would be accessible in other parts of the country depending on the demand.

The CEO of Etisalat Group, Saleh Al Abdooli commented, “Today’s announcement is a historic moment for the company as the commercial launch of the 5G network will set a milestone for the UAE. Etisalat today is the first telecom operator in the world to provide this ultra-high 5G C-band data speed as a commercial service over the wireless network.5G stands out as a game changer with rich potential, an evolution that would elevate services, performance, and enablement. It is the natural progression as part of our network modernization journey, the anticipated technical specifications are promising, bringing along various desirable features and functionalities.”

This new venture will allow subscribers to use data-intensive applications such as high-resolution streaming, gaming, AR/VR and self-driving vehicles among others without an impact on user experience through large bandwidth in 5G networks.

The company showed downlink throughout more than 5Gbps on the site level and more than 1.5Gbps on a customer’s device. Etisalat displayed its network capabilities using a 5G-based drone with a 360° VR camera and 4K streaming experience.
