MultiChoice will withdraw at the end of October the Sony Channel and Sony MAX channels of its bouquets on DStv. In fact, the pay-TV operator has not renewed its distribution contract with Sony Pictures Television Networks, whose channels would have a rather repetitive program schedule.
Already in 2016, MultiChoice Africa removed the two channels, added in 2011, of DStv and GOtv in some African countries. They had to suffer the same fate in South Africa, but MultiChoice had finally maintained both channels despite negative feedback from viewers exasperated by repetitive programs.
In a communication, MultiChoice declares that the Sony channels will as from end October 2018 stop beaming on DStv.
The spokesperson of Sony Pictures Television for the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region Emma Marshall, declared, “Sony Pictures Television’s channels in Sub-Saharan Africa, Sony Channel and Sony Max, will stop being carried on MultiChoice’s DStv platform at the end of October, as the contract between SPT and MultiChoice expires at that time. We thank our viewers in the region for their support. SPT is excited about future opportunities in the Sub-Saharan African market and is exploring programming options for the continent.”
In the end, the decision finally came down on the channels due to too much old content and repeats.
