beIN Sport’s case against TeleLiban rejected by Lebanese court

The Lebanese Court of Urgent Matters dismissed a lawsuit filed by beIN Sport against Tele Liban over World Cup broadcasting rights, saying that the court had no jurisdiction to look into the complaint.

Qatar-based TV network had filed the lawsuit against the Lebanese state-owned broadcaster for infringing its exclusive World Cup TV rights and airing the games for free without obtaining prior authorisation. BeN Sports had awarded the rights to private Lebanese cable company, Sama, which asked for a subscription fee of USD 100 to access the World Cup package.

However, after an outcry from public and cable operators, the Telecommunications Minister agreed to pay USD 3 million to Sama to give broadcasting rights to Lebanese TV cable providers. Tele Liban was not included in the deal; however the state broadcaster allegedly began broadcasting matches from June 16th without authorisation from BeIN Sports.
