BBC Worldwide to open South African office

UK broadcaster, BBC Worldwide, plans to open a South African division to boost local programming after seeing its audience share double in the five years since BBC channels were launched on DStv in South Africa.

BBC Worldwide operates a portfolio of channels – including BBC Entertainment, BBC Knowledge, BBC Lifestyle, CBeebies, and BBC World News – on MultiChoice’s pay-TV platform, DStv, across sub-Saharan Africa.

Ian McDonaugh, executive vice president of BBC Worldwide, said that the confidence the UK broadcaster has in the growing South African market has prompted the decision. The new South African division will develop content sales to other broadcasters and develop BBC’s presence in the rest of Africa.
